At last Tuesday’s final State Fair Criterium, we had nearly the whole team out: Paula, Morse, Julia, Pritzker, Catie, Angie and Alix all raced the Women’s Open race in a very strong field of 26. The plan was to aim for both the race and series wins. Verve controlled the early part of the race in an attempt to position Alix for the series win. In the later part of the race Morse was in a breakaway move with track superstar Melissa Dahlman and Teresa Moriarty that was able to keep away from the field. In the sprint finish, Morse put up a superhuman effort to outmaneuver Teresa, who pulled ahead in the last few meters to take the win. Morse took 2nd (impressive!). Alix finished 5th in the Cat 1,2,3s to capture second overall in the three-race series.

Sara Brokaw moved up into the Expert ranks this weekend to race the Dirt Spanker mountain bike race in Duluth. After several weeks of dominating the Sport races in her first year of competitive mountain biking, Brokaw decided to step it up to the longer race. The race featured 3 laps of slick, leg burning ski hills and fast wet descents.
Saturday’s Richmond Roller proved to be a race determined by crosswind and a punchy finishing hill. Eight Cat 1,2,3 ladies made the trip to the country roads outside of St. Cloud. Early in the race, Pro Mountain Biker Kyia split the field in the blustery headwind of the 2 mile hill and Paula and Catie worked to keep the group away from the rest of the field. They kept the pace high enough to shed Flander’s Paula and then there were three. With three remaining for the last lap, Paula set Catie up to accelerate past Kyia to win the uphill sprint finish and the race.
Paula came in 3rd and Alix finished 5th. Sarah flatted during lap 3, but cheered from the finish line. In the Cat 4s a 20-plus strong field had a dynamic race that saw Angie finishing 5th.
